What is child abuse and neglect?
Alabama law is that if you harm or threatened to harm the wefare of a child or the health which can occur through nonaccidental physical or mental injury; sexual abuse or atttempted sexual abuse;sexual exploitation or attempted sexual exploitation.
Child neglect is under the Alabama law is negligent treatment or maltreatment of a child, including the failure to provide adequate food, medical treatment,clothing, or shelter: provided, however, thta a parent or guardian legitimately practicing his religious beliefs who thereby does not provide specified medical treatment for a child, for that reason alone shall not be considered a negligent parent or guardian; however, such an exception shall not prelude a court order that medical treatment be provided to the child,where his health requires it.
When should I report child abuse/neglect?
Some people are required ,by law, to report suspected child abuse or neglect, but anyone is encouraged to report supected abuse.Those required by law are doctors, school teachers,daycare providers, social workers, surgeons, coroners, dentists, pediatrictions.
Who do I report to? Report any child abuse or neglect to the Department of Human Resources
Penalty for Failure to report or False Reporting: When a person knownling fail to report will receive a misdemeanor charge with up to 6 months in jail or a $500 fine.
